valentine's day recipe:

onion flower / bomb

ingredients

onion 1 pc
flour ¼ cup
salt 1 tsp
paprika ½ tsp
powdered mustard sq
pepper sq

production

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C degrees.
  2. Lightly grease a baking or similar
  3. Peel the onions and cut the base level so it stands but leave the core intact
  4. To make the flower design
Begin as if you are going to cut the onion in half, from top to
bottom, but stop cutting 2cm inch from the core
Cut the onion this way 5 times to form ten sections or "petals."
Carefully loosen the petals slightly by tapping the onion lightly on
the work surface and loosening them with your fingers. Remember
that the flower will 'bloom' or open the more as it cooks
  5. Place the flour and seasonings into a small plastic bag
  6. Spray the onions with cooking oil or lightly coat with a brush to lightly coat each petal
  7. Place in the bag and gently shake to coat
  8. Remove the onion and pat off the excess flour mixture
  9. Spray lightly again with cooking spray to aid in browning
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, until tender
  11. Serve hot, with your favourite dipping sauces

chef notes:

For a deep fried onion flower:

  • soak the cut onion in ice water for 30 minutes before frying
  • towel dry and flour
  • deep fry for 3 to 4 minutes
  • drain well and serve
