plain jane cooking - recipes for the novice:

cottage pie

ingredients

butter
onion
minced beef
stock powder or cube
flour - plain
tinned chopped tomatoes
frozen chopped mixed veg
instant potato
grated cheddar

  1. Melt the butter over a low heat, add chopped onions
  2. Cook for 10 minutes
  3. Add the mince, increase heat slightly and cook for 5 minutes
  4. Add the stock powder and flour, mix in and cook for 2 to 3 minutes
  5. Add the tomatoes and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes
  6. Add the frozen veg
  7. Pour into oven proof dish
  8. Make instant potatoes as per instructions
  9. Spread over the meat and sprinkle over the cheese
  10. Bake at 180°C for 30 to 40 minutes

chef notes:

Garlic paste can be added when cooking the onions if preferred.

This is cottage pie as it uses minced beef. Shepherds pie is made with
minced lamb (shepherds after all look after sheep not cows).
