plain jane cooking - recipes for the novice:

portion sizes

What is a portion?

A question often posed, and to a degree it's a "how long is piece of string" type question.

So many variables, such as are you a big eater, are you a large or small person. The two not being the same as I know small people with huge appetites and large people who are nibblers. Then there things like occupation (from office worker to construction worker), active life style or sedate one

With that said, my portion sizes stated below are for what we would normally serve for an average restaurant portion or what we call 'a cover', and by average I mean your day to day family style place, not an all you can eat Joe Bloggs roadside trucker café or a fine dining, pay through the nose for a miniscule portion on an over sized plate

These portion sizes will give a descent size portion that will satisfy for 'most' people, but you may want to reduce slightly if serving a variety of courses.
