plain
jane cooking - recipes for the novice:

mageirocophobia - the fear of cooking
This section is for all of you who have in the past been
a little intimidated about cooking, for those of you that
didn't so much sweat over a hot stove, but broke out into
a cold sweat at the mere thought of picking up a spoon or
a whisk.
Home cooking is not about being Marco Pierre White
overnight, it is not about laying yourself bare like a naked
chef or yelling Foxtrot Oscar . . .
It is about finding the simple pleasure of food, the enjoyment
of the kitchen and turning something we all have to do at
least once a day into thirty minutes or an hour of pleasure
not dread.
The recipes and ideas you will find under his section, will
I hope encourage you to use a little less pre-packaged foods,
or at the very least use them to the best they can be. So
you will find recipes and ideas such as:
- how
to tell when foods are cooked
- a
list of flavouring ingredients that should be a staple in
your cupboard to make your foods more interesting
- how
to turn an instant mashed potato mix into something a bit
more special
- how
to make a plain jane stew into something more special with
just one simple technique
- how
to make even a fried egg something to drool over
Most of the recipes require you to use convenience products,
because that is what is quickest, easiest and most people
have in their pantry, but its how to use them correctly that
is the key. With most of them taking no longer to prepare
than you normally would take, and require only a smidgen more
skills than maybe you already have.
Far better a home made cottage pie with instant mash potato,
than a frozen pre-made pie or a trifle made with store bought
sponge and custard than a pre-packaged trifle in a plastic
cup.
Life is too short to spend part of your day bored at breakfast
or dreading dinner. take baby steps, grab a glass of wine,
or put the kettle on and enjoy that 30 minutes a day in the
kitchen.
Stand up, stand tall and be proud of being a plain Jane cook.
