halloween:

October
31st is All Saints Day, Halloween or Hallows eve, the day
before All Hallows Day, which marks the end of light days
and rings in the darker, colder ones of winter (northern hemisphere).
The ancient Celts believed that the border between this world
and the Otherworld became thin a this time, and allowed spirits
(both good and evil) to pass through. A family's ancestors
were invited home, while the harmful, evil spirits were warded
off. It is believed that the need to ward off harmful spirits
led to the wearing of costumes and masks. Their purpose was
to disguise oneself as a harmful spirit and thus avoid harm.
Strangely enough, for some reason it has always been celebrated
more in the USA than in the UK. But that has changed greatly
over the past decade, with the UK and other countries taking
its lead from the USA and having fun with it.
My featured recipes this month, will help with dishes or
